Ride the Rails

Photo Courtesy of the Blue Ridge Mountain Scenic Railway

Spring means that train rides are back at Blue Ridge Scenic Railway! Running from March 5th to late December the train is a favorite Blue Ridge activity. You’ll fly past mountains, rivers, and farmlands as you ride through the beautiful countryside of North Georgia. For a short and sweet adventure, take the 2-hour scenic ride but if you are looking to make the trip an all-day event why not go for the 4-hour ride? On the longer ride you’ll have a 2-hour layover in the charming sister cities McCaysville, GA and Copperhill, TN. Stand in two states at once on the Georgia/Tennessee border that lies between the two cities. Go for a quick shopping spree or grab a bite to eat. Then hop back on the train for another scenic journey back to Blue Ridge. Tickets are available online: https://brscenic.com/tickets/

Family-Friendly Outdoor Fun

The kids are off of school for spring break and there’s no better way to celebrate than with some family fun in the great outdoors! One of our favorite spots for family-friendly activities is at The Lilly Pad Village. One of their biggest attractions is their gem mining experience. The kiddos will love sifting through the dirt to find their own beautiful gemstones. The staff is friendly and are always ready to explain to the little ones what they’ve discovered. Not only is this experience educational but it’s also fun & rewarding because the kids can leave with a bag full of goodies.

On top of gem mining, Lily Pad Village also has fishing and mini-golf, so the fun times can last all day long! Another great outdoor activity the whole family will enjoy is horseback riding! You can go on a relaxing trail ride through the forests of North Georgia and become best friends with your horse along the way. Cowgirl Up Stables is great for new riders and Appalachian Trail Rides is always a wonderful choice as well. Giddy on up and bring the whole family along to explore Georgia on horseback!

Spring at the Orchards

Mercier Orchards may be known for their apples but there’s more to them than that! The orchards are incredibly beautiful during the spring because the peach and apple blossoms are in full bloom! On weekends, you can take a farm tour to learn more about Merciers and see the blossoms up close, it really is quite a sight. Pay them a visit in May for strawberry season! Pick the biggest strawberries you can find and turn them into your own delicious strawberry pie or eat them straight from the plant! Recover from your strawberry hunting with a refreshing glass of hard cider or wine, made right at Merciers. And before you leave, shop in the market for all kinds of goodies to bring home with you, and be sure to pick yourself up a fried pie from the cafe too!

You’ll have 4 aerial courses to choose from with obstacles and challenges that range from moderate to extremely difficult. Make your way back to solid ground on the 125+ foot long zipline! Trout Time

In Blue Ridge, we are known as the trout capital of Georgia so you’d be remiss not to head to the waters with a fishing pole in hand! Not only is the weather perfect for a day on the water but the trout supply is abundant in the spring. Our favorite spots to fish are on the Toccoa River or at the Chattahoochee National Fish Hatchery.

If you’re an experienced fisher then, by all means, get out on the water and do your thing but if you need a little extra assistance that’s no problem we’ve got you covered! A few of our favorite fish-loving teams are Cohutta Fishing Company, Blue Ridge Fly Fishing School, and Noontootla Creek Farms. Take your pick but all of these teams will give you the proper guidance and techniques to help you become a fishing expert! Looking for more fishing fun? Don’t miss the Blue Ridge Trout Festival on April 30th!

Outdoor Picnics

Nothing says spring like a delicious picnic with your family! We think one of the most beautiful spots for a picnic is at Morganton Point beside Lake Blue Ridge. Set up at one of the picnic tables or spread your blanket out on the grass and enjoy your feast as you gaze out on the waters of Lake Blue Ridge.

For more waterside spots check out the Toccoa River Park to listen to the calming sounds of the river rushing by. You can even picnic in our Downtown City Park, just pick up some to-go from one of your favorite restaurants downtown and enjoy it in the warm sunshine. Wherever you choose to picnic you’ll be in the great outdoors and able to enjoy the beautiful spring weather!

We’ve comprised a list of our 7 favorite cabin kitchens perfect for creating and serving up a delicious meal!

Boardtown Farms

A wonderfully inviting place in Blue Ridge, welcome to Boardtown Farms. This true vintage farmhouse has been lovingly updated & remodeled and is ideally situated on a 5-acre pasture. Take in the fantastic views! This house is truly unique up and down. The stairs to the second floor are made of refurbished wood from a 100-year-old church in Ellijay. You’ll love the antique cast iron functioning pot belly stove on the main floor. The home itself is professionally decorated in a modern farm motif, complete with beautiful art and farm doors throughout. In addition, the house is outfitted with custom shades that allow natural light through its oversized windows, allowing a clear view of the pasture. You won’t find any place else like here in Blue Ridge.

The chef’s kitchen also has a professional-grade gas stove with a built-in water faucet that instantly produces hot and cold water.

In the winter you can take advantage of the lack of leaves on the trees and really get a good view of the mountains. You can embrace the cold and have an awesome snow day or stay cozy inside your cabin with all the great amenities we provide. There’s no shortage of things to do in the winter, so enjoy these suggestions and tag us with your winter Blue Ridge experiences! #escapetobr

Snow Days

Who doesn’t love a good snow day? With many of our guests visiting from further south where they don’t often get cold weather, snow days are extra special! Get outside and have some fun! Will you have a snowball fight or a snowman-building contest? Or will you walk along the trails surrounding your cabin and take in the views? The mountains are even more beautiful with a blanket of snow covering their peaks, so be sure to take lots of photos. When you’re finished playing in the snow head back inside the cabin and make a warm cup of hot cocoa. Then you can admire the beautiful snow from inside, curled by the fire with a cup of cocoa in your hand.

Stay Warm

Want to hide from the cold and stay warm inside? We’ve got plenty of great indoor activities for you all around town! Find Bigfoot at Expedition Bigfoot in Downtown Blue Ridge! You’ll see all kinds of interesting Bigfoot artifacts and exhibits at the largest Bigfoot display in the U.S!

Are you a putt-putt lover? Pay a visit to 2nd Story Entertainment where they have an 18 hole course that weaves in and out of cool-themed rooms! And that’s not all, they also have giant board games, lots of arcade games, and a wall maze. 2nd Story Entertainment is always a fun place to go for indoor family fun.

And if you really want to feel nostalgic end your night with Vertigo Pinball! They have dozens of themed pinball machines, a select menu of delicious comfort foods, and craft brews! Blue Ridge outdoors is beautiful of course, but there’s plenty of fun to be had indoors too, especially when it’s cold outside!

Snag a selfie with a picture perfect backdrop at Flex Your Selfies– a fun selfie museum located in Downtown Blue Ridge! Inside you’ll find interactive installations, stunning backdrops, and awe-inspiring lighting effects. Capture all kinds of fun & memorable photos with your family and friends that will remind you of your trip to Blue Ridge for years to come!

Winter Hiking

Photo Courtesy of Scott Michael Anna

It may not seem like it but winter is a great time to explore the trails! With over hundreds of miles of hiking trails in North Georgia there’s so much to see. And in wintertime, the trails are less crowded, less buggy, and the views are extra beautiful. Weather permitting, if the trails are safe and there are no fallen trees, then venturing out in the snow can be a fun and unique experience. It’s neat to see Blue Ridge in a different way, covered in snow, and beautiful to look at as well. You’ll be in awe of the winter beauty that surrounds you. To learn more about winter hiking and great trails to explore check out our winter hiking blog: https://www.escapetoblueridge.com/blog/winter-hiking-blue-ridge/

Shopping and Dinner

Head Downtown for a shopping spree and a bite to eat! In peak season, the Downtown can be crowded and it can be hard to get a table; but you shouldn’t have a problem this time of year! Shop to your heart’s content at shops that are equal parts trendy, fun, and uniquely Blue Ridge. Some of our favorite places to shop are Huck’s General Store, Blue Ridge Adventure Wear, Pezrok, Blue Ridge Cotton Company, and Mitzi’s on Main; just to name a few!

Then after a day of stocking up on souvenirs, head to one of the many delicious restaurants Downtown. For dinner and drinks check out The Dogwood or Whiskey & Water, for Cuban food check out The Rum Cake Lady, for Italian check out Masseria’s or Blue Jeans Pizza, or for a little bit of everything check out Chesters or Harvest on Main. With so many great shopping and dining options, you could spend a whole day Downtown!

Spa Day

Photo Courtesy of Serenity in the Mountains

Get your relaxation on with a spa day! Visit our friends at Serenity in the Mountains Spa for a full day of pampering. They do everything from massages, facials, body treatments, and skincare, to mani-pedis. Our favorite way to relax there is in the Himalayan Salt Cave.  You’ll lay back in the zero gravity chairs and feel completely at peace as your entire immune system improves! It’s such a unique experience we highly suggest.

Looking for something right Downtown? There’s also TeaTree’s Boutique Spa right in the heart of Downtown Blue Ridge. They offer massages, facials, body services, advanced beauty, and aromatherapy. Enjoy spacious treatment rooms as well as a serene outdoor area. Wipe your troubles away and come relax for a day!

Scenic Drives

Explore the area and see the snowy mountain peaks in the distance as you venture on a scenic driving tour of Blue Ridge.  You’ll pass by mountains, forests, rivers, and lakes on your journey. For a fun pitstop, we’d suggest visiting The Toccoa River Swinging Bridge or one of our local waterfalls like Fall Branch Falls. Need some road trip snacks? Drop by Mercier Orchards market for tasty treats and plenty of warm fried pies; yum! Follow our scenic drive blog for the best scenic overlooks to stop at on your drive: https://www.escapetoblueridge.com/blog/5-scenic-north-georgia-overlooks/
