Apple Picking

My oh my, fall in Blue Ridge certainly is the apple of our eyes! And where better to spend it than at Mercier Orchards!? In the fall, Merciers comes alive with guests who come from near and far to pick apples, explore the market, and sample Merciers famous fried apple pies! Apple picking at Merciers is U-pick, which simply means you pick your own apples. Search high and low for the perfect apples to bake into a pie, mix into a fruit salad, or simply to enjoy crunching into the apple all on its own. Then take in the market where you can stock up on more goodies like jams, baking mixes, fresh produce, home decor, and more! And after a busy day of apple picking, rest your weary legs and feed your rumbling stomach with fried pies and apple cider donuts from the bakery. Pair your sweet treat with a nice refreshments of apple cider, hard cider, or wine. It’s always a day well spent at Mercier Orchards! Learn more about this special place here: https://www.escapetoblueridge.com/blog/mercier-orchards/

We also love Deep Roots Orchards where you can pick apples, enjoy wagon rides through the orchard, and check out Folk Apothic’s wares. Or venture to Ellijay for the day, to explore many of the orchards that the Apple Capital of Georgia has to offer; like Hillcrest Orchards, B.J. Reece Orchards, and R & A Orchards. And don’t miss the Georgia Apple Festival happening every October in Ellijay! It’s 2 weekends full of live music, great vendors, and lots of apples!

Grab a glass of wine at Bear Claw Vineyards or Serenberry Vineyards. Or spend a “brew”tiful afternoon at Grumpy Old Men Brewing or Fannin Brewing Company. Enjoy the afternoon catching up with friends over an adult beverage. You can even bring along your furry friend to spend the day with you! Fall makes us think about sitting cozy inside with our favorite comfort foods, watching a spooky movie. No need to prepare the meal yourself though, Blue Ridge has all your favorite comfort foods around town! So put the pots and pans away, put your feet up, and let someone else prepare your favorite meal, just how you like it!

As we mentioned earlier,  Mercier Orchards is known for their famous fried pies that are just to die for! They have every flavor imaginable from apple, to cherry, blueberry, to chocolate, coconut, peach and more! Having a warm delicious fried pie from Merciers always makes our day just a little bit better! Vertigo Pinball offers their own version of the beloved grilled cheese. Their “grown-up” grilled cheeses are as cheesy and delicious as they come with a new adult twist. Plus you can pair your sandwich with a beer and a round or two of pinball! Black Bear Bier Garten specializes in German fare so they of course have a giant pretzel! Their Giant German Pretzels are served warm with delicious homemade beer cheese, yum! Chester Brunnenmeyer’s Bar and Grill is known for their amazing wings! They offer an ever rotating selection of their wings with tasty flavors like garlic parmesan, old bay, honey soy, smokin’ hot wings, and so many others. For that southern flair you look for when you come to the south head to Southern Charm. Be sure to get some of their famous biscuits with apple butter. There’s something about a warm buttered biscuit that always hits the spot! And The Dogwood’s whole menu is made up of a select few comfort food favorites with a fresh twist, like loaded potato skins and fish & tots.

Nothing can warm you up inside and out from a chilly autumn day like your favorite comfort foods can! For more delicious eats check out these other great restaurants: https://www.escapetoblueridge.com/blog/favorite-blue-ridge-restaurants/

Come on Ride that Train!

Photo Courtesy of Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

Have you ever wondered what the absolute best way to see all of Georgia’s fall foliage in one shot is? Well, hop aboard the train right in the middle of town. You don’t need a map, your GPS, a bunch of lists of the best roads to take. This is a historic and creative way to take a trip this autumn and see all there is to see from the comfort of a train. All aboard Blue Ridge Scenic Railway!

Climb to the Highest Georgia Peak

There is a lot of advice on how to hike up the mountain, but –pssst- let us let you in on some sound advice. Take the shuttle up to Brasstown Bald. The Brasstown Bald Visitors Center sits atop Georgia’s highest mountain at 4,784 feet above sea level. Surrounded by the Chattahoochee – Oconee National Forest, its cloud level observation deck offers stunning 360-degree views of the colorful Southern Appalachian Mountains and valleys. On a clear day, one can see four states. Your cell phone camera will capture a lot, but for those who take their photography very seriously, hauling your tripod and lenses up the mountain via the shuttle is much easier. Shuttle service is included in the day pass for $7 per person. The shuttle runs 7 days a week 10am – 4:30pm, but closes for lunch break between 12:30 and 1:10pm.

By Sea

You ‘Oar’t Have a Great Time

Photo Courtesy of Lake Blue Ridge Outfitters

If you prefer to be on the water when vacationing, autumn sightseeing while floating has become  “a thing”. Our lakes and rivers are relatively safe, with flat and calm waters. And even the most inexperienced ship hands can enjoy water sightseeing on a paddleboard, kayak or canoe.

Lake Blue Ridge Outfitters can set you up in a matter of minutes with whatever paddleboard or kayak equipment you might need to rent (or purchase). If you want to fish on a gorgeous fall morning, consider renting their Fishing Kayak, but rent it a little longer than planned. Once out on that serene lake, mesmerized by the red and white bobbing float, you might never want to return to land.

Henry David Thoreau wrote that every channel of water was a road for a canoe. You can rent your canoe and secure transportation to the Toccoa River launch with Toccoa River Outfitters. The Toccoa River Canoe trail starts at the Deep Hole Recreation Area and flows 13.8 miles to the take out at Sandy Bottoms. You’ll enjoy views of the colorful forested public lands, pastoral private lands, and most likely, some of their associated wildlife. Coupled with great fishing and some rapids make this a perfect canoe trip. This canoe trail is ideal for beginners and those who enjoy a less than vigorous float in a north Georgia Mountain River. This is the only designated canoe trail in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. Length: 13.8 miles Use: Moderate Rating: Easy River Flow 3-4 MPH.

Peddling through a Photograph

Photo Courtesy of JMC Artistic Photography

We think that pedal boats and aqua cycles are arguably two of the top family-friendly water activities you can enjoy with your entire family- young and old alike. They are suitable for family fun, a picnic out on the water, or even fishing. Both of these water fun floats can be rented at Vogel State Park for use on this area’s favorite State Park lake, 22 acre Lake Trahlyta.

Pontooning

Photo Courtesy of Blue Ridge Boat Rentals

While summer might be the season that comes to mind as the prime time to enjoy a pontoon boat, we suggest you seriously consider a lake pontoon ride in Fall. The crisp air makes you feel alive, as you are no longer battling the oppressive heat.  Lake Blue Ridge is 11 miles long and has 65 miles of shoreline where the explosion of fall foliage will take your breath away. The opportunity to escape on the water before winter arrives makes spending a few hours on a pontoon seem like the best idea yet. To schedule your rental contact Lake Blue Ridge Marina.

By Air

It’s a Boat, It’s A Plane, It’s a Good Time!

Some vacations you might find yourself throwing caution to the wind (and your trip budget, too). If you find yourself on just that vacation then consider a tour by Sea Plane. Offered by Wing – In- It Adventures their Mountain Views Package is an exclusive 60 minute air tour of Lake Blue Ridge, Lake Nottely, and Lake Chatuge. Enjoy  the beautiful views of the Georgia Mountains Region with an eagles view. The deluxe tour plane holds up to three passengers -or- 450 lbs total passenger weight.

Get a Bird’s Eye View

Photo Courtesy of Blue Ridge Helicopter Tours

To say autumn is the most visited time of year here is an understatement. Instead of crowded parks and trails to marvel at the cascade of blazing reds, yellows and oranges of these Blue Ridge Mountains, why not take in the fall foliage from the comfort of a helicopter?  Blue Ridge Helicopter Tours offers a dozen different tours from 8 mins to 90 mins long. Choose your location and your price point.

Hanging Out

Have you been to Town’s County’s (Hiawassee)  Bell Mountain yet? If you aren’t sure, then you probably haven’t, because the ride up there is better than any hair pin ride Disney has to offer. Yet, for some, it isn’t enough to experience the journey up by car, and then be rewarded with a view of up to four states and a Lake that looks more like it was woven in and out of the Swiss Alps. The views once at top and higher platforms -150 more steps straight up- is even more amazing.  And still… STILL, this isn’t enough. So Bell Mountain serves as a launching pad for area Hang Gliders. Maybe jumping off the top of a mountain wrapped in an unpowered flying apparatus consisting of a frame with a fabric airfoil stretched over it isn’t your idea of vacation fun, but going up the mountain to watch others find their thrill on Rosemary Hill, well that’s a freebee experience we think you’ll find is worth the admission.

Zipping Around

Photo Courtesy of Zipline Canopy Tours of Blue Ridge

Maybe not hang gliding, but there is something about flying through the air that is alluring. So, why not fly through the colorful forests attached to a zipline? Zipline Canopy Tours of Blue Ridge is set on 165 acres of beautiful North Georgia Mountain property. Located  only 6 miles from downtown Blue Ridge they  offer a one-hour tour with seven multiple ziplines ranging from 150 to 550 feet in length for a total of half a mile of cable. They also offer a two-hour zipline tour that features one mile of cable with 13 multiple ziplines, ranging from 150 to 1,000-feet in length and ranging from 25 – 75 feet in height. All zipline tours are guided and require no experience.

Up Up and Away!

Photo Courtesy of Balloons Over Georgia

And for our last “by air” suggestion, we leave you with this. The Fifth Dimension sang about it, and those of us old enough to remember the lyrics, dreamt about it. “Way up in the air in my beautiful balloon. Love is waiting there, in my beautiful balloon…” If this fall vacation you are looking for the perfect place to ask for your love’s hand in marriage, look no further.  Balloons Over Georgia is located here in North Georgia, generally operating in the area between Canton and Cumming. Most of their flights launch from an area about 35 miles south of Blue Ridge, but they utilize several different launch sites in the area to take advantage of varying wind conditions and directions.

Whether by land, by sea or by air, experiencing these Blue Ridge Mountains this time of year is candy for your eyes and nourishment for your soul.

Happy Fall, ya’all.

From Ages Four to Eighty: Multi-Generational Vacations

That morning the text message from my niece had an attached picture of Luke, my 4 year old great nephew, rolling his Spider man suitcase through the airport terminal. His eyes, just peeping over his Covid mask, were dancing with anticipation. He and his parents were flying from Denver to Atlanta where they were going to meet his grandparents who were flying in from Austin Texas. His Aunt was also going to meet them in Atlanta after her late morning flight from New York City. We were all meeting to share a week of adventure in the giant playground known as the North Georgia Mountains.

Multi-generational holidays have significantly changed since John Denver chorused about vacationing at his grandparents as a child. He sang of everyone sitting around the fire, old folks spitting chew, Pa would talk about the farm and the war and grandma would sing a ballad or two. Fast forward to the second decade of the 21st Century and Great grandpa is zip lining, Grandma is riding the rapids down the Ocoee River and Great Aunt Ally is exploring the coves of a mountain lake with her nephew, on jet skis.

That’s not to say that there aren’t challenges to bringing three or four generations together for a week of adventure. Sharing life under one roof (or maybe adjoining cabins), includes a diversity in the norm when it comes to meals, bedtimes, acceptable volume decibels and energy levels.  Some mild strategic planning before you all gather together could make for a vacation experience that all will hold as a precious memory for a lifetime.

Getting to Know You

This could be the most important goal of your time together. My sister and I did the planning of this trip. Our goal was this – if at the end of the trip, everyone can say they got to know each person just a little better, that they had special one on one time with each person that week, then the trip will have been a success. With that in mind, a week or so before our family gathered, we sent a list of all who were attending. Each person was instructed to bring with them a stack of 3×3 pieces of paper, each written with something they would like to do with every person on the list, sometime during the week. Yes, even the four year old participated, though his parents helped with the task.

When we arrived at the cabin we set up paper lunch bags tagged with an attendee’s name on each bag on the kitchen counter. Then we filled each person’s bags with the slip of paper that notes what we’d like to do with them during this week. Each evening, before we retired to bed, we picked from our own bag to see what we would do with and with whom, the next day.

As an example, I requested an early morning shared coffee conversation with just my sister, where we discussed her plans for her upcoming retirement. I challenged my brother-in-law to a best “two out of three games” of horse shoes. I asked my niece, who just graduated with her doctorate, to tell me more about her dissertation. I bade my nephew into making his famous cinnamon breakfast biscuits with me and I asked little Luke to take a nature hike with me down to the creek so we would try to gather a toad a crawfish or maybe a butterfly.  At the end of the week, I had these special times with each of them, and also, we did what they wanted to do with me. My sister requested that just the two of us watch old 8mm family movies that she had converted onto DVD, so we could reminisce about our childhoods.

My brother-in-law asked me to teach him how to “win” at Texas Hold-em. My niece, who shares my love of literature and theater, wanted to talk to me about my absolute favorite reads, movies and theatrical performances I had seen in my lifetime. My nephew also chose to spend time with me in the kitchen – where he wanted me to demonstrate how to make my eggplant caponata he has always enjoyed devouring. Little Luke asked that I tell him all the funny jokes I could tell him, and he also requested I read him a story, but I had to act out all the characters.  I am the zany aunt, if you haven’t already guessed.

Make Dinner a Special Occasion Each Evening

We had decided before we met that we would eat all our dinner meals at the cabin as opposed to going out to restaurants. A few nights we cooked together, and a few nights we had take-out and our favorite night was when we put hot dogs on the end of sticks and roasted them over the fire pit, served with lots of cold, sweet juicy watermelon, and of course, s’mores to follow. Staying at the cabin in the evenings gave us all a chance to relax, unwind, indulge in a few beers or a bottle of wine and get Luke to bed at a reasonable hour so he’d be ready for the exploits of the next day.

Evening Fun

After Luke was asleep, we set up the game table. This was probably part of the week’s plan that my sister and I had contrived that was not high on the list of all the rest of the family. Not everyone enjoys games. But we chose easy, fun and interactive games, like “Catch Phrase” and “Mexican Train”. The issue everyone had with this idea ended up being that we stayed up too late every night, because we were having so much fun.

Choosing Daytime Activities

Dinner time and game night helped us all to spend time together on this family gathering. And I’ve already reviewed how we made sure to spend some meaningful one-on one time with each person on the trip. Now this gave us the freedom to plan daytime activities where we didn’t have to be all together. Each person has their physical limitations as well as their interests to take into consideration. One person may want to sit on the porch most afternoons and just read a book while listening to the bird’s sing, while two others want to hike as many waterfalls as they can possibly fit into 7 days. Luke’s grandparents took him off to mine for gems and to a trout farm to fish, giving his parents time to indulge in a married couple’s spa day one afternoon. On another day they jet skied with yours truly. One rainy day a couple of us took Luke to the movies and out for ice cream. One sunny afternoon, most of us went out on Lake Blue Ridge on a rented Pontoon boat. Some of us stayed on the boat indulging in our snacks and spirits while others dove off and swam, enjoying the waters while the pontoon was anchored just offshore. Giving everyone the freedom to choose what they wanted to do with their daytime hours ended up being another wise part of our planning.

When the Adventure Ends

This was our family’s inaugural “multi-generational” vacation. My sister and I had hoped that our plans we had set forth for the week would find favor with everyone. And even though we are family, we also wanted to be sure we all appreciated one another at the end of a week of sharing each other’s space.

We decided that it was best to take everyone’s temperature before we departed ways, so after our last dinner together, and before we played our game that evening, we asked everyone to write down answers to just three questions. 1. What did you like best about the week as planned? 2. What of our plans do you feel you didn’t need to do again?  3. Would you like to have another family vacation like this in the next year or two?

It turns out that Game Night, eating dinner every night at the cabin, and the little slips that were written before hand and then chosen each day out of the lunch bag were the highlights for everyone. Question number two had some interesting opposing responses. Those who tended to not go out on adventures during the day as much felt that they would be more likely to do more activities next time. Those who chose to be out and active everyday said they wished they had spent more time just relaxing with those back at the cabin.

As for question #3…… well, it seems that not only are we getting together for a week next year, but they all agree that they want to come back to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
